Over a lifetime of drawing and painting likenesses I have learned that with flattery and caricature aside generally people do not like portraits of themselves or those they love, with the exception of portraits of their idols, children or pets. These they like. I also do not like portraits of myself, even self-portraits. The thing is that the very act of describing someone's likeness, whether they like it or not, is quite a dance, a dialog, an examination, an investigation, a romancing of future memory and the making of a monumental tribute out of a face to face moment, when done right. Even when they come out all wrong. Portrait painting remains one of the great pleasures and challenges left from the artistic tradition. |
